Facelift, Eyelid Surgery, Brow Lift, and Rhinoplasty for Palo Alto, San Jose, and the Bay Area

Facial aesthetic surgery requires a skilled surgeon and an aptitude for precision. The goal is to enhance the features while maintaining a natural appearance and minimizing scarring. Dr. Linda Waters performs eyelid surgery, as well as facelift surgery, brow lift, rhinoplasty, and other procedures for her Palo Alto, San Jose, and Bay Area patients.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Surgery of the eyelids, known as blepharoplasty, requires precision and skill. That is why it is important to choose a surgeon who has experience and familiarity with this particular area of plastic surgery. Dr. Waters has years of experience in performing eyelid surgery in the Palo Alto area.

There are two major types of blepharoplasty that are offered at our practice. One is a primarily cosmetic procedure that addresses excess skin and fatty tissue of the eyelids, while the other, known as Ptosis repair, is the treatment of a condition in which the eyelid does not fully open due to a damaged or poorly developed muscle.

Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

Due to age, sun exposure, and heredity, it is not uncommon to develop loose, redundant skin around the eyes. This can make people look perpetually tired, angry, or older than they feel. Cosmetic eyelid surgery, offered at Dr. Waters' Palo Alto practice, can remove the excess skin and contour the fatty tissue through direct eyelid incisions or hidden lower eyelid incisions, leaving the eye area more youthful.

Ptosis Repair

Drooping eyelids, called ptosis, is a condition which may be congenital or acquired. It occurs when the tendon of the eyelid’s levator muscle is overstretched or detached, resulting in an eyelid that does not lift fully. This can impair vision as well as give a person a sleepy appearance. People with ptosis will often raise their eyebrows or tilt their head back while trying to see, in an effort to tip the drooping eyelid out of the way.

Ptosis repair surgery restores the detached tendon to its proper position, allowing the patient to fully open the eyelids. Often, a blepharoplasty is performed at the same time, to give a more youthful eyelid.

Forehead (Brow) Lift

When a wrinkled forehead, drooping brows, or deep frown lines are the source of dissatisfaction with one’s appearance, a forehead lift, also known as a brow lift, can be performed by Palo Alto surgeon, Dr. Linda Waters, to smooth and tighten these areas. By lifting the eyebrows and smoothing the skin of the forehead, Dr. Waters is able to remove deep wrinkles and frown lines, making the patient look younger, more relaxed, and more alert. A forehead (brow) lift may be combined with a facelift or eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) for Palo Alto and Bay Area patients who are seeking a more extensive facial rejuvenation. Brow lift incisions are usually placed in the hairline, where they are easily hidden. For some patients, Dr. Waters may suggest BOTOX® Cosmetic as an alternative treatment or as an intermediate measure.

The results of today’s forehead lifts are very natural looking and inconspicuous. Dr. Linda Waters works hard to enhance the features while maintaining the patient’s normal appearance and concealing scars where they will not be noticeable. Patients who have undergone brow lift surgery at Dr. Waters’ Palo Alto practice are highly satisfied with their results. Facelift Surgery

Loose, wrinkled skin at the sides of the face and along the jaw line can add years to the appearance and distract from a person’s natural beauty. Facelift surgery, available through Dr. Waters’ Palo Alto plastic surgery practice, can be used to smooth and tighten the skin of the cheek and neck area, removing wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. This can give the patient a firmer, more youthful appearance as well as potentially increasing self-confidence.

Facelift surgery addresses the skin along the sides of the face and neck. To smooth wrinkling along the forehead and between the eyebrows, a brow lift may be able to be performed at the same time, providing an overall tightening and rejuvenation of the facial features.

Facelift surgery scars are usually concealed behind the hairline and in the creases around the ears. Although they will never completely disappear, these lines should fade over time and will not be noticeable to the casual observer. Dr. Waters’ exceptional skill and experience allow her to achieve beautiful, natural-looking results that remain true to each patient’s unique features. Contact Dr. Linda Waters at her Palo Alto plastic surgery practice to learn more about facelift surgery or to schedule your consultation.

Neck Lift

Although often combined with facelift surgery, a neck lift can also be performed alone to smoothen and tighten the skin of the neck and under the chin. It is not uncommon for the neck to age more quickly than other areas of the body, or to sag after significant weight loss. This procedure can smooth loose or sagging skin of the neck area. If there are fat deposits under the chin, they can be addressed with liposuction, if the neck skin has good elasticity. As with a facelift, neck lift scars are usually concealed in the creases in front of and behind the ears.

It may be possible to combine a neck lift procedure with facelift surgery, brow lift, eyelid surgery, or even rhinoplasty. Contact our Palo Alto office, also serving San Jose and surrounding communities, to discuss your options or to schedule a consultation with Dr. Waters.

Rhinoplasty

Dissatisfaction with the size, shape, or position of one’s nose can be a source of frustration and reduced self-confidence. Surgery to reshape the nose, known as rhinoplasty, can change the size of a nose that is out of proportion with surrounding features, smooth out bumps or ridges, or change the shape of the tip.

In addition to changing the size, shape, or angle of the nose, rhinoplasty, performed in the Palo Alto area by Dr. Linda Waters, can also be used to correct some types of breathing problems, such as those that result from a deviated septum. Depending on your individual circumstances, rhinoplasty to improve breathing may be partially covered by medical insurance. Be sure to discuss this with your surgeon and insurance company before the surgery.

Understanding your specific concerns about the appearance of your nose will help Dr. Waters to target the areas that you would like to improve. During your rhinoplasty consultation, Dr. Waters will discuss the procedure with you in depth and ask specific questions to help her understand how you would like your nose to look. During surgery, she will use her extensive skill to reshape your nose in a way that meets your desires and complements your natural features.

Otoplasty

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, can reduce the size or alter the shape of overly large ears or prominent ears. Since most ear growth takes place within the first four years of life, a child’s ears are mostly, if not completely, full-grown by age five. Otoplasty is normally performed on children between the ages of four and 10, although the surgery can be performed on adults as well.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a serum that is injected directly into the muscles of the forehead to reduce frown lines and lessen wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic may also be injected into the crow’s feet and eye/cheek area, lips and neck bands to decrease muscle over-activity. It works by preventing the uptake of Acetylcholine into the muscle, which normally triggers muscle contraction. When the facial muscles are relaxed, the skin is smoother and creases disappear or lessen. It takes only a few moments to administer and you can return to work or exercise immediately. The onset of BOTOX® Cosmetic typically takes five to seven days and the effect usually lasts three months and sometimes longer. It can often replace the need for a brow lift until the eyebrow hooding becomes more severe.

Restylane® and JUVÉDERM™

At her Palo Alto practice, Dr. Waters offers Restylane® and JUVÉDERM™, leading products in the realm of dermal fillers. Dermal fillers work by adding volume to specific areas beneath the skin, smoothing out wrinkles and creases and creating a fuller, firmer appearance. Restylane® is made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that is found naturally in the body, and is non-animal based, so there is no risk of allergic reaction.

Restylane® is effective in reducing frown lines and nasolabial folds (deep lines from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth). It can also be used as a lip augmentation product, adding fullness and shape to thin lips. The effects are not permanent, but usually last for about six months. Unlike facelift surgery, the results are immediate, although there is often mild redness for the first three days after injection. Facelift surgery is a more effective option for loose cheeks jowls and neck folds.
